  • Breaking Barriers in the Management of Amniotic Fluid Embolism With Interventional Radiology: A Case Report
by Amber W Sun on August 27, 2024

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare obstetric emergency with a high mortality rate despite treatment. The pathogenesis likely involves inflammatory cytokines reacting to amniotic fluid in the bloodstream, causing rapid multi-organ failure and coagulopathy. Prompt recognition and supportive, multidisciplinary treatment are vital for enhancing patient outcomes. This report presents the case of a 27-year-old female with acute decompensation due to AFE. Our patient was scheduled for cesarean...

  • CISD3/MiNT is required for complex I function, mitochondrial integrity, and skeletal muscle maintenance
by Rachel Nechushtai on May 23, 2024

Mitochondria play a central role in muscle metabolism and function. A unique family of iron-sulfur proteins, termed CDGSH Iron Sulfur Domain-containing (CISD/NEET) proteins, support mitochondrial function in skeletal muscles. The abundance of these proteins declines during aging leading to muscle degeneration. Although the function of the outer mitochondrial CISD/NEET proteins, CISD1/mitoNEET and CISD2/NAF-1, has been defined in skeletal muscle cells, the role of the inner mitochondrial CISD...

  • Expanding landscape of coronary microvascular disease in co-morbid conditions: Metabolic disease and beyond
by Patricia E McCallinhart on May 11, 2024

Coronary microvascular disease (CMD) and impaired coronary blood flow control are defects that occur early in the pathogenesis of heart failure in cardiometabolic conditions, prior to the onset of atherosclerosis. In fact, recent studies have shown that CMD is an independent predictor of cardiac morbidity and mortality in patients with obesity and metabolic disease. CMD is comprised of functional, structural, and mechanical impairments that synergize and ultimately reduce coronary blood flow in...

  • QTc Interval: A frequently unrecognized electrocardiographic interval
by Ali Osama Kamal Zaki Ibrahim on May 3, 2024

The QT interval, an electrocardiographic temporal representation of the ventricular depolarization and repolarization, is an integral parameter that must be carefully evaluated to gather critical information regarding electrical instability that may cause malignant ventricular dysrhythmias or sudden cardiac death. The QT interval is affected by several inheritable and acquired factors, such as genetic mutations, electrolyte disturbances, and medication interactions. We strongly believe that...
