EXHIBITIONISM PSYCHOSEXUAL DISORDER
Exhibitionistic Disorder is a mental disorder that causes a person to expose his sexual organs—or genitals–to other people, usually people they’ve never met and are not expecting it, according to the American Psychiatric Association. The exhibitionist gets sexual enjoyment from the behavior.
This is a sub-category of several sex-related “paraphilias,” which are described as sexual arousal due to atypical sexual fantasies bringing sexual distress to the self and possible harm to others.
Sex Ratio: 20M:F
Causes: Unclear, may include parental practices and childhood experiences.
Medications: SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) appear to help reduce milder cases. Chemical castration may be required in more severe cases.
Therapies: The sexual urges probably cannot be totally eliminated but therapists seek to reduce the emotional trauma and criminal behaviors. The U. S. Federal Government and several states have “Sexually Violent Predator Laws.”
