Anxiolytics
Anxiolytics, or anti-anxiety drugs, are a category of drugs used to prevent anxiety and treat anxiety related to several anxiety disorders. These drugs tend to work rather quickly and can be habit-forming. Because of this, they’re usually only prescribed for short-term use.
Cluster Number:
Wiki Number: PW199C
Diagnosis: Anxiolytics (Anti-Anxiety Agents)
US Patients: Anxiolytics reduce anxiety while anxiogenic agents increase anxiety. Anxiolytics are minor tranquilizers; barbiturates are obsolete
World Patients: Benzodiazepines are used for short-and-long term relief of severe and disabling anxiety. 15 are listed.
Sex Ratio: Alternatives are carbamates, antihistamines, opioids (Opioids are often addictive.), antidepressants, and SSRIs.
Age Onset: Sympatholytics are anti-hypertensives inhibit thesympathetic nervous system: beta or alpha blockers and alpha-adrenergic agonists
Brain Area: 12 “miscellaneous” drugs are listed.
Symptoms: Alternatives to medication include CBT or exposure therapy. These may have limited effectiveness.

- Near-infrared light induces neurogenesis and modulates anxiety-like behaviorby Xing Qi on December 21, 2024
CONCLUSIONS: We found that flickering NIR (940 nm/40Hz) light illumination improved neurogenesis in the hippocampus with anxiolytic effects. This innovative approach holds promise as a novel preventive treatment for depression.
- Linking Anxiolytic Action to Hippocampal "Theta"-A Personal Historyby N McNaughton on December 21, 2024
This paper provides a personal history of work starting with the discovery that anxiolytic drugs reduce hippocampal theta frequency. It includes parallel work on septal elicitation of theta carried out in Jeffrey Gray's laboratory in Oxford; a statement of my original scientific perspective on the work; and a description of later work in my laboratory in New Zealand confirming the function of theta rhythmicity per se and its mediation of the effects of anxiolytic drugs on behavior. I finish with...
- Integrative analyses of the transcriptome and metabolome reveal comprehensive mechanisms of monolignol biosynthesis in response to bioclimatic factors in Magnolia officinalisby Mingxin Zhong on December 20, 2024
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate temperatures and appropriate precipitation enhanced the metabolism of monolignols in M. officinalis, ascribed to elevated levels of effective enzyme that correlated with the temperature and precipitation modulation of PAL, 4CL, and CCR activity. Furthermore, this study discovered that cinnamonyl alcohol and 4-coumaryl alcohol were critical precursors for the production of magnolol and honokiol, indicating potential strategies for improving M. officinalis' pharmacodynamic...
- Berberine alleviates chronic pain-induced anxiety-like behaviors by inhibiting the activation of VLT-projecting cACC (Cg2) neuronsby Min He on December 20, 2024
Chronic pain is often accompanied by anxiety, and gradually increasing anxiety makes the pain itself more protracted. Berberine has been found to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier to treat psychiatric disorders, but its neurocirculatory mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we found that neurons in cingulate area 2 (Cg2) of the caudal anterior cingulate cortex (cACC), but not in Cg1 of the cACC, projected to the ventral lateral thalamus (VLT). Next, we induced chronic inflammatory pain by...
