ABSTRACT

Medical malpractice stress syndrome (MMSS) is an underappreciated manifestation of stress that physicians may experience when facing malpractice lawsuits. This syndrome may cause significant emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms, and can lead to job dissatisfaction, burnout, depression, and even suicidal ideation. Radiologists are at high risk of a malpractice suit and thus of MMSS. This Viewpoint explores implications of MMSS for radiologists as well as potential solutions, including educational efforts, support systems, and tort reforms.
