Substance – Induced Disorder
RESOURCES FOR PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS
A substance-induced disorder is a mental or physical condition directly caused by the use, abuse, or withdrawal of a substance, such as alcohol, drugs, or certain medications. These disorders can include changes in mood, anxiety, psychosis, or other symptoms that mimic independent mental health disorders and are not present without the substance’s influence. The key is that the symptoms are a direct, physiological consequence of the substance, and for a diagnosis, they must appear within a month of use or withdrawal and cause significant distress or impairment.
