Ganser Syndrome is a rare mental health condition characterized by giving deliberately wrong but “close” or “approximate” answers to questions, often accompanied by a clouded state of consciousness, hallucinations, and other dissociative symptoms, essentially appearing to misunderstand simple questions while still demonstrating an awareness of the question asked; it is considered a dissociative disorder and was first described by psychiatrist Sigbert Ganser in 1897.
