Any intentional act causing injury or trauma to another person or animal by way of bodily contact. Both a spouse and children may be the victims of physical abuse, as in child abuse and domestic violence against an adult live-in partner.

Progression: Children later are more likely to abuse substances or think about suicide. They, too, may become abusive adults.
Causes: Abusive parents who did not have positive models, high stress, misunderstanding of a child’s behavior or level of development.
Therapies: Teaching parents how to target anger and how to develop empathy and positive skills.
